State Duma Deputy Ruslan Gadzhiev visits APP’s Center for Pharmaceutics

He visited the Scientific and Educational Center for Pharmaceutics of APP as part of his working visit to Kazan today.

Accompanied by Rector Lenar Safin, the politician familiarized himself with the work of the center’s main departments. In particular, he was shown the medicinal chemistry, exploratory and preclinical research, clinical pharmacology, and quality control units.

“The Center for Pharmaceutics works on creating pharmaceutical drugs in the classical understanding of production and based on biopharmaceutics,” the Rector clarified. “The latter is a relatively new direction at APP. We are one of the research groups actively developing biomedical technologies in the Republic of Tatarstan and in Russia as a whole.”

Dr. Albert Rizvanov, Doctor of Biological Sciences, specialist in gene and cell therapy, and Chief Researcher at the Research and Clinical Center for Precision and Regenerative Medicine / Laboratory of Gene and Cell Technologies, provided more details about the operating principles of these technologies.

He showed guests the experimental rooms containing equipment for genetic analysis and facilities with bioreactors used to study laboratory batches of pharmaceuticals. Here, bacteria are first grown in a dish, then the flask with the sample is placed in a bioreactor.

“On average, the cycle takes 3 days. This way, we obtain about 7 liters of enriched culture, from which the first component of the cell-based drug can be isolated,” the scientist explained. “Then we obtain a purified preparation (base), which is used at the next stage, where it is encoded for specific immune cells of the patient. The gene preparation essentially ‘reprograms’ the cell, and it learns to recognize and eliminate tumor cells.”

He added that the Center develops drugs not only for cancer treatment but also for many other orphan diseases using the same principle.

Currently, Kazan University has begun reconstruction of its cell facilities to start producing drugs for specific patients according to GMP standards.

Ruslan Gadzhiev highly praised the Center’s equipment level and noted that scientists have already created such a foundation that they can move from the sample stage to pilot clinical production with further scaling across Russia.

As a reminder, APP is included in the list of Russian medical and scientific organizations authorized to manufacture and apply biotechnological drugs for individual use.

Furthermore, the university has also joined the consortium of the Scientific and Technological Center for mRNA Technology Development, where it is involved, jointly with the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, in projects aimed at combating tumor diseases, among other goals.

The Scientific and Educational Center for Pharmaceutics, established in 2011 within the framework of the Federal Target Program Development of the Pharmaceutical and Medical Industry of the Russian Federation, is a structural subdivision of Kazan University.

Currently, more than 90 employees work at the Center – experts in chemistry, biology, medicine, and veterinary science. The Center’s main task is developing innovative drugs, including synthesis of pharmaceutical substances, their screening for specific activity in vitro, elucidation of mechanisms of action, preclinical safety and efficacy studies in vivo, as well as manufacturing of finished dosage forms.
