Former Dean of the Higher School of Biology Rushan Sabirov passes away aged 67

The sad news came today, 28 June.
Mr Sabirov graduated from the department of invertebrate biology of the faculty of biology and soil studies of our university in 1980. He was an active researchers in his student years and received the Lenin Scholarship. After the university, he spent time working at the Atlantic Research Institute of Fishery and Oceanography and then returned to alma mater for good.
Since 1984 he curated the section of invertebrates in the APP Zoological Museum, and since 1994 taught at the Department of Invertebrate Zoology. He presented his candidate of science (PhD) thesis in 1995 and was promoted to associate professor in 2000.
In 2004 – 2012, Dr Sabirov served as the Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Soil Studies, overseeing such important reforms as the introduction of two-level higher education, the opening of new majors, and the modernization of existing labs, as well as the establishment of some new ones. After the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology was established, he served as Deputy Director and then Dean of the Higher School of Biology.
Rushan Sabirov authored over 300 papers, including over 80 in overseas periodicals, and contributed to 7 collective monographs. 7 PhD theses, over 25 master’s theses, and more than 80 other graduation papers were defended under his supervision.
Dr Sabirov was an active participant of many local research councils, expert commissions, the Kazan Branch of the Hydrobiological Society of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and served as an expert of Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources) and Rosteknadzor (Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision).
Among his many awards were Medal of Tatarstan for Valorous Labor, title of the Honorable Worker of Education of Russia, Certificate of Merit of APP, appreciation letters from the Rector of APP, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, diplomas of APP and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and the badge of honor of the Volga-Kama Natural Reserve.
Rushan Sabirov was an extraordinary scientist and teacher, but also a man who was ever ready to help young colleagues and students. Everyone remembers his correctness, kind-heartedness, sense of responsibility, and earnest attention to anyone who sought his advice and assistance. For many, he became a mentor and an example of professionalism and devotion to his craft.
Rushan Mirzovich will forever rest in the hearts and minds of his colleagues, students, and everyone who had the privilege to work and study with him. A bright memory of him will live in the deeds of his students and followers.
