SUMMARY:Lunchtime Concert: A Journey Through Spanish Piano Voices\, Maria Canyigueral piano
DESCRIPTION:This programme traces a vibrant arc through Catalan and Spanish piano music\, moving from intimate poetry to dazzling virtuosity. \n\n\n\nWe begin with Frederic Mompou’s Cançons i danses\, a collection of gentle\, folk-inspired Catalan melodies paired with dances\, each a small\, tender jewel that invites quiet reflection. \n\n\n\nFrom this intimate beginning\, Isaac AlbĂ©niz expands the musical landscape with Recuerdos de viaje\, leading us to wander through vivid memories of travel\, painting scenes full of life and colour with his lively rhythms and lyrical charm. \n\n\n\nXavier Montsalvatge’s Sonatine pour Yvette was written for his daughter. The composer dedicated the opening movement’s playful and lyrical melody to her\, capturing childlike innocence and joy.  \n\n\n\nThe piece elegantly bridges old and new — its neoclassical style and transparent textures nod to tradition while speaking in a modern voice. \n\n\n\nFinally\, the recital culminates with Enrique Granados’s Allegro de Concierto\, a grand and passionate work that showcases the full expressive power of the piano\, bringing the programme to a thrilling and virtuosic close. \n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\n\nMaria Canyigueral has been described by La Vanguardia as “a pianist of great personality”. Praised for her “finely nuanced sensitive playing” (Pizzicato Magazine) and “delicate\, subtle\, and deeply intense musical vision” (MelĂłmano)\, she is recognised as one of the leading lights among the new generation of Spanish pianists. \n\n\n\n\nShe has performed at prestigious venues including Palau de la MĂşsica Catalana\, Auditori in Barcelona\, FundaciĂłn Juan March in Madrid\, Wigmore Hall in London\, Gran Teatre del Liceu\, and Ljubljana Festival. \n\n\n\nCollaborations include contemporary composers AntĂłn GarcĂ­a Abril\, Benet Casablancas\, Nicolas Bacri\, Konstantia Gourzi and Moritz Eggert. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHer acclaimed solo album Avantguarding Mompou (Audite\, 2020) features the complete Cançons i danses by Frederic Mompou alongside commissioned works\, and was praised by International Piano\, Pizzicato\, and Revista Musical Catalana. \n\n\n\nWith violinist Lana Trotovsek\, she won the Gold Medal at the Global Music Awards (2016) and released multiple albums\, including Beethoven’s complete violin sonatas (ZKP RTV Slovenia/Festival Ljubljana\, 2020)\, awarded MelĂłmano de Oro and five stars in Musical Opinion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOther recordings include Beethoven’s complete cello works with Ramon Bassal\, awarded MelĂłmano de Oro and nominated at ICMA (Da Vinci Classics\, 2023) and Milestones (Somm Recordings\, 2024–25) with Trotovsek and Boris Bizjak\, praised by Gramophone and the BBC. \n\n\n\nInternational appearances have taken her to Spain\, the UK\, Japan\, Belgium\, Italy\, Slovenia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Croatia and France. She is also the artistic director of a chamber music series at the SarriĂ  Theatre in Barcelona since 2021. \n\n\n\nBorn in Catalonia\, Maria studied at the Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona with Michel Wagemans\, completed her Master of Arts in Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Sulamita Aronovsky\, and received guidance from Nino Kereselidze in Madrid and AndrĂ© de Groote in Brussels. \n\n\n\nShe currently teaches piano at ¶¶ŇőAPPµĽş˝ College\, London. www.mariacanyigueral.co.uk

SUMMARY:Blues and Roots Ensemble perform Music by Mingus & More
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: Singers from ¶¶ŇőAPPµĽş˝ College\n\n\n\n\n\nFor this concert\, the Blues and Roots Ensemble is delighted to welcome singers from ¶¶ŇőAPPµĽş˝ College to join them in presenting fresh arrangements and special vocal features\, celebrating the music of Charles Mingus and beyond. \n\n\n\nBiography\n\n\n\nBlues and Roots Ensemble (BARE https://bluesandrootsensemble.com/) is a diverse collective of accomplished international musicians from South Africa to Sicily\, Australia to Cuba known for its raucous\, visceral and captivating concerts. \n\n\n\nLed by bassist Ed Babar\, the ensemble has been immersed solely in the music of Charles Mingus since forming in 2016. The ensemble has now evolved to also perform arrangements of Abdullah Ibrahim\, Dorothy Ashby and other significant jazz composers.  \n\n\n\nThis new set offers the chance to shine a light on an important area of jazz history\, offering a sense of hope from some of its darkest moments. \n\n\n\nAs well as a performing ensemble\, BARE is a charity and has grown a reputation for its new initiatives in music education\, offering creative experiences to participants of all ages and abilities\, but particularly those in less represented areas\, through music workshops\, online resources and live performances.
