Joy Alabi: Enrolling in the university to find answers in economics

The new participant of our Second Home project is Joy Alabi, a freshwoman from Nigeria.

A Diplomatic Gesture

Joy is a student at the Institute of International Relations, History, and Eastern Studies, studying international economic relations.

“When I looked at universities online, I saw that APP is a very prestigious university. I chose it. It’s where I study what interests me. And Kazan is also very beautiful,” she says.

While living in Nigeria, Alabi wanted to focus solely on international relations. But after studying the topic in more detail, she became interested in the economy of her home country. She thought: why not combine the two?

“In economics, I’m very interested in how I can maximize efficiency with limited resources. This is a global problem, and it applies to every country. Resources are scarce everywhere, and people always want more and more. That’s why I chose international relations, not just the economics of a specific country. Economics as a science provides theory and strategies for solving problems using macroeconomic indicators that help address common issues like inflation, unemployment, and so on,” she explained.

Student Spring

Joy’s debut as a creative artist took place at Freshman Day. She performed some rap at the festival’s gala concert.

“I sing and dancel, as those are my hobbies. I didn’t study vocals – I come from a family that always sang. Nigeria is a very musical country, and we love music. I just started singing and realized I had a good voice,” the young woman explains. “Rap is just one of the genres I enjoy. No one expects you to think and read so quickly! Plus, the ability to express yourself through movement also gives you a sense of satisfaction. I think rap is my thing and something I’m good at. If I learn the lyrics, I can rap in Russian too. I love dancing because it helps me explore and feel the music better.”

She also has a passion for modeling.

“I currently work as a model and enjoy it. I know I look good, I have the energy, I love seeing the results of my work. The photos I take help me see a different me,” she says confidently.

Second Home

Studying at APP was the first time Joy went abroad.

“Of course, I miss my homeland. I was born in Nigeria, my parents are there, and my life began there. There’s no better place than home,” continues the interviewee. “Russia was the first foreign country I visited. I’d never left home before. There are good people here. Russia has a rich culture. Education and healthcare are high-quality. It’s safe here. In my group, there are students from Russia, Zambia, and Turkmenistan. They are all supportive and friendly. Student life is smooth, and I have very nice roommates in the dorm.”
