HackAtom project held as part of Summer University

The activity, organized by this year’s Summer University’s key partner, Rosatom, was held in parallel in Russian and English.

Before the start, Ksenia Naidyonkova, head of the educational program of the Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering of the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, presented the ObninskTech project. Its goal is to ensure Russia’s leadership in the international education market in nuclear and related technologies and to form a technological elite in partner countries to support the future export of Russian high‑tech products.

Next, Anna Terekhova, Deputy Head of the Department of Nuclear Physics and Technologies at MEPhI, spoke to the students.

The key idea of HackAtom was that students from fields far removed from nuclear power and nuclear technologies could propose their own vision of which actions in their professional domains would be needed when implementing nuclear infrastructure projects in various regions of the world.

Foreign and Russian students could take part in HackAtom. Participants were divided into multidisciplinary teams of 11 people each, bringing together technical and humanities areas. The students will develop projects for a chosen facility in a specific region of the world, focusing on key areas of nuclear infrastructure. They will cover technical, economic, and sociocultural aspects.

Educational tracks also continued. As part of the Summer University program, a lecture was held by Alsu Akhmetshina, Director of the Institute of Management, Economics and Finance, titled The Role of ESG in Modern Business. She spoke about the triple concept of sustainable development, which represents the integration of environmental, economic, and social components. Sustainable development is considered as a process of economic, social, and other changes in which the use of natural resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of scientific and technological development, personal development, and institutional changes are coordinated with each other and reinforce the current and future potential to meet human needs and aspirations.

At the Institute of Physics, participants witnessed experiments Physics in Everyday Life by Alexey Vorokhov, an engineer of the Department of General Physics. An excursion around the laboratories of medical physics, nuclear physics, physics of molecular systems, thin‑film systems synthesis, optics, and nanophotonics was also held.
